A lesson plan to and Advanced English class

Lesson Title: How to survive in Colombia 
Topic: Giving instructions
Age: 18 
Language Focus: Modal verbs 

Main Goal: That students solve real life problems. 

Objectives

  • Students will be able to interact between them, using language in context. 
  • Students will be able to participate in the class giving their own ideas, experiences and opinions. 
  • Students will be able to use language based on a situation of interest and relevance to them. 
Materials: Newspaper "The city paper", cards





































Procedure

1. Warm up (15 minutes)
  • Students have to make 5 work teams.
  • The teacher will give every group a card that has some instructions, which will lead them to a place where a newspaper is hidden. For every group there is a different place, but the same newspaper. 
  • After finding the newspaper, they will come back to the classroom.
2. Activities (30 minutes)
  • The newspaper has 5 different articles. The teacher will tell students what every article is about, and every work team has to choose an article. 
  • In every article there is a situation that presents a problem, after the students have read it, they have to make a presentation about how to solve that problem, using modal verbs and clear instructions. 
3. Closing (15 minutes)
  • Students will give opinions about the presentations of the other groups, giving new ideas based on their own experience. 
Assessment: Write a paragraph about how did you survive to the most dangerous situation 
you have lived. 

Homework: Give instructions using modal verbs about what a person should do in case of an earthquake. Be clear and give as many details as possible.
